International Literacy Day 2017

India's literacy rate is at 74.04%. In a participative democracy like India, a literate population is required to build a nation with strong social, economic and political foundations. Literacy is an important starting point that brings awareness in people to work towards a better living.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines literacy as the "ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.
Digital literacy is the set of competencies required for full participation in a knowledge society. It includes knowledge, skills, and behaviors involving the effective use of digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop PCs for purposes of communication, expression, collaboration and advocacy.

To create an awareness on the need of Literacy, Deshna foundation organized an event - ‘International  Literacy day’ on 10th September, at SOS Children's village, Puducherry with the theme of "Literacy in a digital world".

Morning session started with a presentation about Deshna Foundation and followed by a brief presentation about the theme"Literacy in Digital world" by Mr. Praveen Kumar. Also we spoke about the demerits of internet addictions, cyber bullying, etc,. Later the children and volunteers were split into micro groups.

The students were engaged with information on Digital literacy and practical sessions on common computer operations like searching contents on the web, use of email and the use of Digital Library. Their skills were tested through a contest on preparation of power point presentation about the generic topics and were neatly presented by the children. Best two teams were awarded with prizes by the chief guest Mr. Kabilan ( Suyam IAS Academy).

Deshna foundation would like to thank all the volunteers, Donors and faculties of SOS children's village for their kind support and cooperation.

Flood relief by Team Deshna

#chennai_flood  #chennai_micro  #TN_flood  #rain_relief
Popular hashtags used in the social media during the recent flood which hit northern Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Worst hit rains of the century..... Chennai, kancheepuram, Cuddalore , Pondicherry regions faced heavy rainfall and flooding. Many for the first time saw such heavy rains in their lifetime. Government single handedly couldn't handle the emergency situation. The police, the military and many volunteers from various places  joined hands, rescued peoples to safer places, providing food and shelter. Rains have taught us there is much superior power than money , the nature. Not just Deshna Foundation joined the rain relief teams, there were inumerous souls who came into action for the rescue and rain relief.  A big Salute to those Unsung Heroes!!

We at Deshna Foundation started our Rain relief activity with the funds from Friends and their family. Started small but we ended up benefiting 3800 families at least through our rain relief kits in Cuddalore and Pondicherry Region. Team Deshna would like to thank the donors and the volunteers who helped us in the cause.  Our rain relief kit consist of the following material Rice,Sugar,Atta,Bathing soap, Detergent soap, Masala packets,Candle,Matchbox, Aquasafe water purifying sachets, Biscuit, Towel.

Diwali celebration

Deepawali or Diwali is certainly the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It's the festival of lights (deep = light and avali = a row i.e., a row of lights)  which literally illumines the country with its brilliance, and dazzles all with its joy. The festival of Diwali is separated by different tradition, but what remains true and constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness.

This year, we at Deshna Foundation decided to spread the happiness and enjoyment with the kids and elderly people. Our team of volunteers despite of rains and their busy work schedule made this years deepawali event a great success..

More than 150 beneficiaries which include differently abled children and elderly people have been benefited. We thank our donors for supporting us to share happiness with them. A delicious meal, fruits, sweets and snacks were distributed for the following organizations..

    • Yurt on the wheels
    • Jwala home for the special children.
    • Juvenile observation home.
    • Pushpa-Gandhi home for the old age people
    • Baby sarah's home
